Grace murmured nonsense words to Katie as she paced the kitchen in an effort to soothe both of them. After that wonderful night in Jack arms, these men breaking in was beyond believable. Jack had handed over her niece and chased after the bald man, and he was still outside in the violent weather. The wind blew so strongly, the rain blew horizontally.

The tactics of these intruders felt too similar to the man in her apartment attempting to hold Katie hostage to be coincidence. This meant even more people were after her. She shuddered. There seemed to be no safe escape.

Maybe Katie made a convenient hostage. Because the man at her apartment had searched for and claimed to only want the memory stick her sister had supposedly made, the same as Wes Crain. In contrast, these guys only wanted Katie. They’d said nothing about a computer memory device. They’d said nothing at all. The idea sent another shiver through her.

The inside door flew open. Grace instinctively retreated to the hall doorway, clutching the baby close. She’d fight these guys to the death before she let them take her niece.

Jack staggered into the kitchen, panting heavily and completely drenched. Water literally cascaded from his bare shoulders.

“Here.” She handed him a towel from the stack on the counter and dropped one to the floor for use as a mat. He rubbed his head and shoulders and hooked the terrycloth around his neck. His pinched gaze roamed her face. “Please tell me you aren’t hurt.”

Her heart puddled at the concern in his voice. “My wrist is probably going to be bruised. That bald guy has a grip like a bear trap.” She lifted her hand. “Katie wasn’t hurt either, that I can find, only terrified out of her mind.”

He dropped a kiss on her mouth and brushed a finger over Katie’s cheek before pulling paper towels off the roll to press against the sodden bandages on his palms.

“Come here.” She shifted Katie onto her hip, and the little girl snuggled against her.

Jack stepped closer, lifting an eyebrow. She turned his chin for closer inspection. “Your cheek’s swollen.”

He lifted a hand to his face and winced. “Souvenir of fighting off Baldy.”

“We both survived.” She dropped her hand from his chin. “You need ice on your cheek.”

He held the freezer drawer closed with a knee. “In a minute. Let’s catch our breath.”

“If you wait too long, ice won’t be as effective.” She brushed away water dripping down his temple. “I was so worried the wind would sweep you away.” And I’d never see you again.

“It was a close call.” Jack heaved a huge sigh and swabbed his head again with the towel. “Too bad I have nothing to show for the effort. I couldn’t catch either of them.”

“Why were you even trying?” she asked. Katie had let go of her shirt, and Grace set her on her feet.

“I want to know what’s going on.” His gaze found hers. “Don’t you?”

“Call me a wimp, but I’m just glad they’re gone.
